Vertebrae: the framework
The spine is a column of bones. Its cervical region is in the neck, the thoracic region is in the middle back, and the lumbar region is in the lower back. The sacrum connects with the pelvis.
Discs and joints: movement and support
Discs sit between vertebrae and help distribute load. Small joints, ligaments, and muscles also support and guide movement. Changes in one structure can affect the surrounding system.
Nerves: the communication pathway
The spinal cord and nerve roots carry signals between the brain and body. Pressure or irritation can produce pain, tingling, or weakness away from the spine itself.
Why the examination matters
An imaging finding is only one piece of the picture. The pattern of symptoms and physical examination help determine whether a finding is relevant to your problem.
